Oh dear ... the storm has completely changed course and is heading towards Oman. It will hit Masira tomorrow evening and then move up through Oman and will affect Muscat. Stormy weather expected until Sunday. People, this is MUCH stronger than Gonu. It's going up to grade 5 - super cyclonic storm tomorrow (purple! - the worst) when it hits land. Gonu was only barely orange when it hit Oman. This one has moved from yellow to orange to red, and tomorrow at purple (windspeed of 250 km/hr).
Masira and Ras Al Hadd are being evacuated at this very moment and people are going crazy buying supplies in Musat and Sur. WHY AREN'T THERE SERIOUS WARNINGS ON TV?

ReplyDeleteYes why is there no PRE CYCLONE information and POST CYCLONE information. Even a child could figure out this is a basic human requirement. OMAN TV isn't worth anything...no thanks Oman...

Slow down everyone, I have not been able to find any confirmation of the Cat 5 prediction or even the landing of the storm - and Oman tv is non stop reporting and updating - please look before you fuel the flames of rumor and panic !

The Weather System over Arabian Sea
Warning no. 5
Heavy rainfall has continued to fall over some parts of Masirah Island and parts of coastal areas of Al-Sharqiya region in the past hours associated with winds up to 70km/hr. Latest Satellite images and numerical weather prediction charts indicate the tropical cyclone PHET is centered over west Arabian Sea has moved further towards North West direction. It's centre is currently located near latitude 19.3 degrees North and longitude 59.3 degrees east. PHET is around 160 km away from Masirah Island. Maximum sustained wind speed around the centre is estimated to be around 180 km/h and by which it is still classified as Category 3. The cyclone is expected to enter the land from the area between Adoqum and Masirah Island which will affect mainly the Masirah Island and the regions of Al-sharqiya and aAl-wusta with about 2 metres of storm surge over the coastal areas .
The rainy convective clouds of this cyclone (PHET) expected to extend to affect Governates of Muscat and Al-buraimi and regions of, AlDhakhlia and AlBhatinah and Al-Dhaerah within the next 48 hours
The Directorate request People in the affected areas are to take precautions on the low lands from flowing Wadis because of the heavy rain and Fishermen are also advised to be precautious as seas are expected to be rough along the

OmanTV had stuff on IN English lastnight. I watched it. But it was on the Arabic channel which I am sure most expats don't watch and not a lot of Omanis either lol. The ROP were speaking out through there. There is also Oman radio in English. I found lots of information but found all the newspapers and websites by the gov. and others to be badly maintained. There should have been a basic safety and info notice issued on the ROP website of course. InshaAlllah, next time round???? LOL.
