More Royal Decrees...

Looks like His Majesty's been extremely busy working on protesters' demands lately. Just last night he announced plans to establish a new government university (FINALLY! Oman's 2nd). He also revealed plans to establish an Islamic bank (one of the demands of the protesters). This is great news for Oman, and I encourage protesters to drop the idea of canceling all personal loans. Oman's budget is not infinite. Canceling loans is not an investment. Education is.

  1. Mabrouk to His Majesty and the nation for a second government university. When the protests lead to better education, that is true cause for celebration.

  3. Drop the loans? I am SORRY but no one forced Omanis to take loans AT ALL. I am from a non-Muslim country and managed to save for a car and pay my rent and try to save for a house WITHOUT taking a HARAAM loan with Riba. You took the loan? You're fault. You pay it off. Dislike the unislamic financial institutions ALL YOU WANT, but don't blame them for your own weaknesses of taking the loan and then whine you want it wiped cuz it is a sin.

Sorry but people here don't know what they have, that's why I used all my savings to come here. I have inlaws who are Omani and have a salary of 250 OMR for a family of ten and they don't take loans and live with enough food and rent. Not great, but their morals forbid them from taking loans, and I think they've been blessed by it in that their car breaks down less then people who bought new cars with haraam bank loans ect.

This demand his Majesty should never grant. People have to be responsible for themselves sometimes.

  4. Yeah, fantastic comment on the personal loan bail-out issue! I'm sure this will be the right lesson to teach the omani population for the future; "If you spend more than you earn, don't worry, Government will come and save you." That makes perfect sense....

  5. Have you ever read the book dice man? I struggle to understand the random nature of the concessions without any clarity on what the main goal is!

To Anonymous, that may be the way we do it in resource rich, domestic population low countries of the Gulf but Oman is neither so not really a go-er...
