No I haven't disappeared. I've been sick. Has anyone noticed there's a SERIOUS sugar crisis in Oman? I went to SIX supermarkets yesterday and no sugar. I'm not a sugar fan, but I had to bake cookies for guests. What's up with the sugar? I haven't noticed anything in the newspaper.
.
Rania and I are going out tonight. We'll go sugar-searching and maybe I'll convince her to get off her **** and start blogging again :-)
There's plenty of sugar up here in Muscat....
ReplyDeleteThat is weird, I noticed that Sultan center was running really low on sugar today. Glad I bought some!
ReplyDeleteI think it's just the usual supply-chain/re-ordering problem. One time I searched all of Muscat for Maggi Sauce - everyone was out. Two weeks later - stacks and stacks of the sauce everywhere. Same happens with the Al Marai Lactose Free Milk.
ReplyDeleteYes there is a big crisis in Salalah, I was in Almashoor supermarket and I heard one of the cashers saying 40kg of sugar in Yemen is 20 R(R.O.).. That is in Yemen right now... but here we have no sugar at all...
ReplyDeleteIf you find any sugar please send me some I want to make some tea
I wouldn't know, but that sounds funny in a way.
ReplyDeleteHow about an alternative? Splenda? Brown sugar? Raid your coffee shops?
LOL come here to UAE, we have enough sugar. Have fun on your outing of sugar searching. Sounds fun. :|
ReplyDeleteMaybe if you stop using it all to bake those sinfully delicious, creamy, sweet, chocolately cupcakes... we'd have more sugar!
ReplyDeleteAs a reader you may think of these questions why such baisic commodity is not available in the markets? Why didn't the accountable source intervene?Who is responsible traders or government?having asked yurself you would have some expectations as the answers.
ReplyDeleteIn this point you have to go back for sometime to what was happening in world economically?
If this commodity is not stored in government stores abundantly such crisis easy to emeraged.
We are as consumers must be protected by this useless system so far,and I think each country has its own warehouses to supply the markets.
In this case, i am definitely sure that if things dont change to better in coming days means we don't have department of consumer protection.
I know this is an international phenomenon but it doesen't prevent the country of being prepared.

A couple of months ago in Sharjah, UAE we had a problem like that, then all of a sudden the price of sugar became so expensive.
ReplyDeletetoday's Muscat Daily had a story about global sugar shortage
ReplyDeleteEvidently the sugar crisis is going to continue until April when Brazil harvests. HAH! And the price of sugar is going to double.
ReplyDeleteTime to change our eating habits.

I don't understand the reason behind such "crisis''. It remind me of the Laban crisis we had last year during Ramadhan. The demand for sugar is pretty consistent (unless rates of Diabetes increase suddenly), I don't understand why supply decreases so suddenly.
ReplyDeleteMost of the sugar in Oman is imported from India i think, the sugarcane crop in India has been very bad and that prompted a sugar crisis in India. Basically India is the largest producer of sugar in the world and right now it doesnt have enough sugar for itself. Its going to be a good few months until you get cheap sugar again :D
