Even More Sentences!

Eight more people have been convicted for their 'negative and defamatory writings' (I believe that means lèse majesté). One year in prison and a fine of 1000/- OMR. Full names, photos in prison uniform, year of birth and place of employment or study were published. A ninth female detainee has been proven innocent and was released. Source: Oman News Agency.

  3. You're quite something, Uncle Mti. But I do rather agree with you. Why would anyone ever thing such a thing would be acceptable? If it's a criminal offence to flip someone the finger on the road, how could it be less to directly insult the person of the head of state, in writing for for all the world to see?

I believe in freedom of speech, but not freedom of personal insult. I do hope, though, that the tradition of clemency and reconciliation continues, and that these people are relieved of most of their sentences. I am sure that will be the case, too.

  5. Why wait? It's Eid next week; that would be a good time, or 18 November latest. :)

  7. At least I deal with some decent people here. People like Dhofari Gucci and
The Linoleum Surfer. You know what, if one had a decent upbringing it is hard for one to insult his/her Gardner or house maid leave alone MAWLANA The SULTAN!. It is all in the upbringing, the formative years of a child matters a lot. If one had a deprived childhood, surely he or she will do all the unexpected to hurt others. How sad.
